  10.  AB    OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the influence of oral IFN (interferon) alpha
  11.        monotherapy of HIV-infected patients on the CD4 and CD8 cell count in
  12.        peripheral blood. METHODS: We studied 22 HIV-infected patients with
  13.        initial CD4 cell count less than 500 per cu mm during a period of 90
  14.        days. 11 of them received oral IFN alpha, 100u daily. 3 of them were
  15.        treated with AZT (zidovudine), 600-1200 mg per day. The remaining 8
  16.        patients did not receive any treatment because of lack of compliance
  17.        (active drug users). CD4 and CD8 cell count were determined using
  18.        fluorochrome labeled monoclonal antibodies (Becton-Dickinson) and
  19.        FACSort flow cytometer. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS:
  20.        After 90 days of treatment there was no significant difference in CD4
  21.        and CD8 cell count alteration between these groups of patients. However
  22.        an astounding improvement in general condition of the patients receiving
  23.        oral IFN alpha was observed. A follow-up study is essential to evaluate
  24.        the relevance of the results obtained.
